2008
At present, India is sitting right on a time bomb. The threat comes from within. Thirty-six million women are recorded as missing. The economic burden of the marriage dowry works only in favour of male heirs, rendering the birth of a girl shameful. Even though ultrasounds and abortions are medical acts which supposedly constitute a step forward for women, they can also be turned against women. Trapped between tradition and modernity, the second most populated country on the planet eliminates girls even before their birth. Demographers will readily confirm this crisis of selective abortion of female foetuses, which they term "foeticide".
